Non-lucrative visa Spain
Spain does not have a visa called the retirement visa. What it has is the non-lucrative residence visa, and for a non-EU retiree with a pension or savings it is almost always the right route. It permits you to live here. It does not permit you to work.
Short answer
01Who the Spanish non-lucrative visa is for §
It fits a retiree or pre-retiree who will live on income they already have: a pension, investments, rental income from a property elsewhere, or savings. That is precisely the client we work with.
It does not fit you if you intend to keep working, even remotely for a foreign employer. That is a different route, and the honest advice is to say so at the start rather than have it unravel later.
If you hold an EU, EEA or Swiss passport you do not need this at all — see EU residency in Spain, which is faster and cheaper.
02Non-lucrative visa income requirements §
Spain expresses the requirement as a multiple of the IPREM, its public income indicator: a set multiple for the main applicant, plus an additional percentage for each family member joining you. Because the IPREM is revised, the euro figure changes — which is why any site quoting you a hard number without a date should be read carefully.
What counts, and how it is evidenced, matters as much as the amount:
- Pension income — official statements, usually covering the last twelve months.
- Savings — bank certificates, not screenshots. Consulates want the bank’s letterhead and an average balance over time, not a one-off deposit that appeared last month.
- Investment and rental income — with documentation showing it is recurring.
- Both together — income and savings can generally be combined.
For how the threshold fits alongside living costs and tax, see how much money you need to retire in Spain. A large sum that arrived recently raises questions rather than answering them. If a transfer is coming, it is better to have it seasoned and explainable before you file.
03Health insurance for the non-lucrative visa §
The requirement is health cover equivalent to the Spanish public system. In practice consulates look for a policy from an insurer authorised in Spain, with full cover, no co-payments, no waiting periods and typically no annual cap.
Regularly refused: travel insurance, international plans with a deductible, anything with a fee per consultation, and policies where repatriation or specific cover the consulate expects is excluded. The certificate wording is scrutinised.
And the point that matters for the next twenty years rather than the next twenty weeks: buy for the person you will be at 80. Ask what the premium does at 75 and 85, whether pre-existing conditions are excluded permanently, and what happens with residential care. See healthcare in Spain for retirees.
04Non-lucrative visa documents §
- Criminal record certificate from every country you have lived in over recent years, apostilled and officially translated. It has a validity window, so ordering it too early is as bad as too late.
- Medical certificate confirming you have no disease with public health implications under the International Health Regulations. The wording is specific; a general check-up letter is refused.
- Passport with sufficient validity remaining.
- Application forms, photographs and the consular fee.
- Proof of your address in the consular district, since you must apply where you legally reside.
Almost everything here needs an apostille and a sworn translation, and those add one to two weeks that nobody plans for. This is the part where coordination earns its fee — not filling in forms, but sequencing the validity windows so nothing expires before your appointment.
05After your non-lucrative visa is granted §
- Collect the visa and travel to Spain within its validity.
- Register on the padrón at your town hall once you have an address.
- Apply for your TIE residence card within the first month, with fingerprints, at the immigration office.
- Register your healthcare, open your bank account, exchange your driving licence.
- Make a Spanish will — see wills and inheritance.
06Renewing the non-lucrative visa §
The first authorisation is for one year, renewed in blocks of two, and after five years of legal residence you can generally apply for long-term residence with far fewer conditions.
Here is the catch. To renew, you must have actually lived in Spain — you cannot be absent for most of the year. In practice that means spending more than 183 days here, which is exactly the threshold that makes you Spanish tax resident on your worldwide income.
So the non-lucrative visa and Spanish tax residency arrive together. They are not two separate decisions you can take at different times, and any adviser who presents the visa without the tax consequence has told you half the story. Read pension tax in Spain before you apply, not after.
Non-lucrative visa document checklist§

Spanish-authorised insurer, full cover, no co-payments, no waiting periods.
-
Criminal record certificate, apostilled and translated
From each country of residence in recent years. Watch the validity window.

Referencing the International Health Regulations 2005.
-

With enough validity left for the permit.

Non-lucrative visa Spain: common questions§
Can I do any work at all on this visa?
No economic activity in Spain. Remote work for a foreign employer is discussed confidently online and carefully by immigration lawyers, because the permit is expressly non-lucrative.
If you genuinely intend to keep earning, say so at the outset and we will look at a different route.
Can I apply from inside Spain as a tourist?
The non-lucrative visa is a consular process in your country of legal residence. Arriving as a visitor intending to sort it out here is one of the most common and most expensive mistakes we see.
How long does it take?
Documents two to four weeks, translations another week, legal preparation days. Then the consular appointment and the decision, which nobody controls. Plan four to eight months end to end, and start before you give notice on anything.
What if we are refused?
There is an appeal route, and often a better second application. But the useful work happens before filing: if we do not think your file will succeed, we tell you at the feasibility stage and refund the review.
Does buying a house help my application?
It evidences your ties and your accommodation, which does no harm. It gives you no residence right of its own, and the investor route by property purchase was withdrawn in 2025.
